Bear Hair Snare on White Memorial Foundation

Bear Hair Snare Baited with Scent Attractant
Black Bear have recolonized the state of Connecticut over the past several years.  Black Bears are frequently observed at White Memorial including adult females with cubs.  Michael Evans, a graduate student at the University of Connecticut, is examining the Black Bear population throughout northwestern Connecticut.  White Memorial is supporting this project by allowing Michael and his team to use the property.  Several hair snare stations have been set-up on the property using a scent attractants.  The hair samples are collected weekly and analyzed using molecular techniques.  These techniques are so precise that Michael can identify individuals using the DNA collected from the hair sample collected.  This work will help determine the population size and demographic structure.
