Hunting Dragons at White Memorial

  In preparation for an upcoming odonata-themed mini BioBlitz, we've been visiting ponds, streams, and wetlands around the property, catching and identifying as many dragonfly and damselfly species as we can.  While several species of dragonflies and damselflies are generalists and can be found near most bodies of water on the property, others have specific habitat preferences and are much more difficult to find. Dragonflies and damselflies, especially specialist species, can help us better understand different habitat types, and it's possible that they can act as indicator species.  This means that changes in their abundance or in the assemblage of species at a given habitat can warn us of changes in that habitat, such as a shift in water quality.
 
     Dragonflies are most active when it's sunny.  Their speed and agility makes them almost impossible to catch in flight,so we generally waited until they paused to rest on vegetation.  Damselflies are smaller and some can be difficult to see, but they are active even when it's cloudy and are much easier to catch.  Some female damselflies resembled closely related species so much that a positive ID in the field was impossible.

     Aside from improving our hand-eye coordination, catching dragonflies and damselflies has also given us practice working with a dichotomous key.  Dichotomous keys work by presenting you with two statements.  You choose whichever is true for your specimen and it will direct you to the next set of two statements.  For example, to identify the variable dancer (left) you would say his eyes are on separate sides of his head rather than his eyes are connected in the middle of his head.  This statement would lead you to another question that would help you determine whether you were holding a damselfly or a clubtail, which are the only dragonflies without connected eyes.  The next statements would further weed out species of damselflies until eventually you would be left with the variable dancer.  These statements help us hone in on what the distinguishing characteristics for dragonfly and damselfly species are.  In many cases, the last few statements in the key had us examining the last two segments of the insects' tails under magnifying glasses.  Attention to detail is crucial, but so is knowing which details are important.

     We sampled at fifteen locations (see map below), and positively identified 36 species from seven different families (see the link at the end of this post). We chose locations to represent different habitat types.  The species present will vary according to habitat type and time of year, with some species reaching their peak later in the year than the species we encountered. I'm in the process of uploading our findings to Odonata Central.  I encourage other odonata enthusiasts to do the same, and to join us on Saturday, July 9th (weather permitting), for our odonata mini BioBlitz!   Sunscreen, bugspray (but not on your hands!), long pants and waterproof boots are recommended, and butterfly nets are provided.

BioBlitz 2016

     The White Memorial wildlife research team participated in this year's Connecticut BioBlitz, which was in Hartford. We are especially proud to have contributed this year, as Connecticut BioBlitz 2016 has set a new world record for most species identified in a 24-hour period!  A total of 2,765 species were identified in a variety of taxa including including plants, fungi, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals.

      BioBlitz lasted from 3:00 pm on June 3rd to 3:00 pm on June 4th.  Scientists from a variety of fields participated, as well as members of the Hartford community. James Fischer, Molly Mullen and I, as well as several others from outside of White Memorial, focused our attention on mammals.  The goal was to determine what species were present in the area, so tracks or scat left behind by animals counted as much as seeing the animal itself.  We were very surprised by the variety of species living in and around the Hartford area.  Members of the mammal team saw woodchuck, white-tailed deer, gray squirrel, red squirrel, beaver, muskrat, and fisher.  Tracks and signs identified included red fox, flying squirrel, weasel, bobcat, and bear, as well as a variety of small mammals.  In all, 23 species of mammals were identified.  


Since we had to rely so much on tracks and scat, it was very exciting to see the animal itself.

2013 Wetland Bird Surveys Completed

Over the past few weeks, Mary Hawvermale and I have been searching around the property for evidence of rails, bitterns, and other wetland birds.  Rails are a type of secretive marsh bird that probe for invertebrates among plants in shallow water, while bitterns stalk fish and amphibians among dense reeds.  Both types of birds tend to remain deep in the vegetation and are very difficult to see. The Connecticut DEEP and similar organizations across the country are concerned about rail populations because of habitat loss.  The marshes these birds call home are increasingly subjugated to pollution and development.  As a result, rail populations have decreased, but we would like more information on their populations as we proceed with conservation projects. White Memorial's vast expanses of marsh makes this the ideal location to gather data for rail conservation.

Mary was kind enough to sample the Bantam River by kayak between Whites Woods Road and Bantam Lake, while I sampled the remaining locations by foot.  The protocol was relatively straightforward:  we would arrive at a predetermined site, listen silently for rails calling for five minutes, and then play calls on a boom box to elicit calls from the rails.  Rails are difficult to see, but they tend to call back to a recording of their voice.  This habit made it easier for us to determine the presence of rails. 

In Connecticut, we have six rail species, several of which are State-listed:

-King rail (Rallus elegans) breeding population State Endangered
-Black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis) breeding population State Endangered
-Sora (Porzana carolina)
-Virginia rail (Rallus limicola)
-Clapper rail (Rallus longirstris)
-Yellow rail (Coturnicops noveboracensis), very rare in Connecticut

In addition to the rails, we also surveyed for the presence of least bittern and common moorhen, two other State-listed wetland species.

Over the course of the past few weeks, Mary and I have heard Sora, Virginia rail, and King rail.

Virginia rail was our most common species, being heard in eight out of our sixteen study points.  These rails were consistently around Little Pond and Mallard Marsh.  One interesting observation was that these birds shifted locality during last week's heavy flooding.  Last Saturday, there was about a foot of water covering the boardwalk at Little Pond, and the Virginia rails were nowhere to be found.  However, we observed Virginia rail at Duck Pond and near Catlin Woods, two places we have not seen them this year.  The flooding also brought the rails out of the marsh onto puddles on the trails.  Here it was easier for the rails to forage.  We observed a total of seven rails, as opposed to the four or five rails we observed when the water levels were closer to normal.

Mary heard a single Sora along the lower Bantam River, but we did not hear any Sora near Cranberry Pond, where they were last year.

In addition to these species we expected to find, we were pleasantly surprised by a King rail calling from the marsh northwest of Little Pond.  We first received reports of this King rail from the first week of June during our BioBlitz. Apparently this individual has continued to live around Little Pond.

 
                                                                
Altogether, we observed a total of about six individual Virginia rails, one Sora, and one King rail.  We hope that continuing research can help us shed more light on wetland bird conservation.

White Memorial Organizing BioBlitz for 2013

Middletown BioBlitz

White Memorial is proud to announce that it is planning a BioBlitz for May 31 - June 1, 2013 as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of White Memorial Foundation's incorporation.  A BioBlitz is an event where every living organism is counted within a 24 hour period.  Scientists who study specific groups of flora and fauna, referred to as taxonomists, perform the counting and are helped by volunteers.  Families are welcome to attend nature walks, learn more about our natural world, and participate in the inventory.  BioBlitzes are intense with every one trying to count as many species as possible and are loads of fun!  Thousands of organisms are counted by experts and amateurs in only 24 hours.  Our organizing committee consists of local educators, scientists, and conservationists.  Check back here to learn more about our BioBlitz in 2013!
